For anyone who constantly doubts their ability, whether it being to lose weight or other aspects in life; or anyone wondering how they can change their mind-set from one of doubt to one full of confidence and positivity; this article is for you.

After briefly touching on the power of a positive mind in ‘The Tips Personal Trainers Don’t Tell You’ I am constantly asked by customers and clients, “I have struggled with my weight my entire life, how am I supposed to be positive?” or “How are you so positive in your life?”

The truth is I, like the majority of the population, have that little voice in the back of my head filling me with doubt whenever I change any aspect of my life, from gaining or losing weight, writing my weight loss books, to setting up an online business.

It is natural for this doubt to creep into our minds when thinking about or commencing change.

The determining factor in making a successful change in one’s life is how they respond to this doubt.

Do you go into your shell and give up before you start? Do you keep delaying the start of your change? Do you make a half-hearted attempt to change and find that it is easier and more comfortable to remain the same, resulting in you quitting when the first obstacle or sign of hard work appears? Or;

Do you embrace this doubt and use it as motivation to make a change?

I think you will all agree it is very clear to see which one of these will lead to a successful change.

So how do you overcome these doubts?

To begin with, when I left school I weighed in at 50kg and obviously wanted to put weight on. So I tried. Nothing! I ate everything. Still nothing! I read a mind-set (self-help style) book that promoted a positive mind. So, I got off my backside, realised I had to be positive and told myself, “Let’s go, I’m going to gain weight.” Yet despite pushing weights, eating a lot, and being positive, thinking to myself constantly that ‘I’m going to gain weight,’ the fact-of-the-matter is I didn’t gain any weight.

‘So much for a positive mind,’ I thought. I literally began to believe that no matter what I try, I wouldn’t be able to put weight on.

However, while studying health science at university and completing a Personal Training course in my spare time, I learnt the principles of training and the easiest, most important formula to change appearance and weight.

Weight gain = calories in (through nutrition) OUTWEIGHS calories out (through physical activity)

Therefore, for anyone wishing to lose weight:

Weight loss = calories out (through physical activity) OUTWEIGHS calories in (through nutrition)

Knowing this, I calculated how many calories I needed to eat to gain weight.

I then found an amazing website, called ‘CalorieKing’, in which you can enter the food you eat over the course of the day to find out exactly how many calories you consume. Once I entered my food into ‘CalorieKing,’ I soon realised why I hadn’t put any weight on. Simply, I wasn’t consuming anywhere near the amount of calories that I needed to be in a positive calorie balance, therefore I couldn’t possibly put any weight on.

So, I sat down and wrote out a nutritional plan, entered the calories into ‘CalorieKing’ and knew that if I followed this plan, along with the principles and the tips I had learnt during my studies, I would gain weight. This alone turned my mind from doubting my ability to gain weight to knowing, 100%, that if I follow this nutritional plan and a training program, I would gain weight.

Note the difference, after learning as much as I could, I was truly positive in my ability to gain weight. Whereas previously, I attempted to tell myself “I am positive” and then went about trying to gain weight blindly leading to no results.

I empowered myself to control my situation through knowledge. This lead to a positive mind-set.

Remember this:

Pessimism breeds failure.

Optimism breeds success.

Gain optimism through knowledge.

As knowledge is power which reduces the level of risk.

So, how do you become positive? Knowledge.

If you want to be a success, learn as much as you can about the subject and learn from experts or those who have ‘been there, done that.’

Acquire knowledge by reading, listening and trying. Change that mind-set into anything is worth a try. You lose nothing by trying.

If you want to lose or gain weight, remember the formula. Apply it with the tips and steps I have highlighted in ‘The Tips Personal Trainers Don’t Tell You’ and you will be on the way to a lasting, life-changing journey.
